Bangladesh Faces Deadliest Measles Outbreak on Record

Bangladesh is currently experiencing the world's worst measles outbreak, with the death toll among children surpassing 1,000 since March. According to the Directorate General of Health Services, the country has recorded 1,002 deaths and 187,484 infections. Other data from the health ministry indicates more than 166,000 suspected cases and 999 deaths, including 100 confirmed measles fatalities. More than 146,000 suspected patients have required hospitalization.

Health officials and experts attribute the surge to significant vaccination gaps. While Bangladesh previously maintained high vaccination coverage, disruptions occurred in 2024 and 2025 during political turmoil following an uprising against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain stated that procurement changes under the interim government triggered vaccine shortages, while the postponement of a vaccination program and the cancellation of a nationwide measles rubella campaign left children vulnerable.

Medical facilities are under severe strain. Dr. Nanda Dulal Saha of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital reported that patients are being treated on the floor due to overcrowding. This crisis coincides with a rise in dengue cases, which have seen more than 45,000 hospital admissions this year. In response, health authorities have launched a mass vaccination drive, with spokesperson Zahid Raihan stating that over 18 million children have been vaccinated so far.
