Bayeux Tapestry Arrives at British Museum Amid Diplomatic Celebration and Reports of Minor Damage

The Bayeux Tapestry has arrived at the British Museum in London for the first time in nearly 1,000 years. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham marked the occasion with a special viewing on Wednesday. The exhibition, which runs from September 10 until July 11 of next year, has seen record breaking ticket sales. The British Museum reported that online queues peaked at over 80,000 customers and ticket sales generated over 2.5 million pounds in a single day.

Following the tapestry's arrival in July via a high security operation, French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard reported that two threads were torn during the journey. She stated that the damage was minimal and that the artifact is in virtually the same condition as it was before leaving Bayeux. A British Museum spokesperson confirmed that an initial reading of the condition report suggests the tapestry's condition is virtually unchanged. These findings follow previous warnings from artist David Hockney regarding the risks of temperature and humidity changes to the fragile linen and wool.

President Macron described the loan as a significant marker in Franco British relations, stating that the tapestry represents a shared chapter of European history. Prime Minister Burnham called the loan a tremendous demonstration of goodwill. Historians noted that the tapestry was originally designed with a political purpose to legitimize the invasion of William the Conqueror.
