BJP Leads Rajasthan Urban Local Body Polls as Independents and Smaller Parties Gain Ground

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the leading party in the Rajasthan urban local body elections held on September 9 and 11, 2026. According to results declared on Monday, the BJP won 4,179 wards, while the Indian National Congress won 3,613. Independents secured a significant 2,273 wards, establishing themselves as a decisive force in several urban bodies. The elections covered 309 urban local bodies, including 10 municipal corporations, 51 municipal councils, and 248 municipalities, with over 10,000 councillor posts at stake.

The BJP secured clear majorities in the Udaipur, Bhilwara, and Kota municipal corporations, and narrowly won the Jaipur Municipal Corporation board. However, the results presented a mixed picture in other key areas. The Congress won the Bikaner corporation and emerged victorious in Ajmer and Pali. In Jodhpur, the BJP and Congress remained neck and neck, each securing 44 wards. A notable anomaly occurred in Bharatpur, the hometown of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, where Independents won 36 of 65 wards, outperforming both the BJP and Congress.

Smaller parties also registered specific gains. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won a majority in the Baran Municipal Council with 31 of 60 wards. The CPI(M) secured enough seats to form a board in the Nokha Municipality in Bikaner, winning 29 of 45 wards. In a peculiar result in the Parbatsar municipality, a BJP candidate received only one vote in Ward 13, which was won by the Congress.

Outlets with a center lean framed the results as a mixed verdict that exposed chinks in the BJP's urban armor and highlighted the Congress's failure to consolidate as the principal challenger. Center-right sources emphasized the BJP's overall lead and the failure of Congress's claims, while center-left sources focused on the anomalous performance of Independents and the specific losses suffered by the BJP in key regions.
