A body believed to be that of 18 year old British hiker George Smyth has been found in the Bucegi Mountain region of Romania. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the body was discovered following a search that began in November. Mr. Smyth, a geology student at the University of Bristol from Shropshire, went missing while attempting to hike from Poiana Brasov to the village of Bran.
Before his disappearance, Mr. Smyth contacted rescue teams from Tiganesti Valley to report that he was disoriented and physically exhausted. Rescuers described him as being in a very isolated and hard to access area during severe weather conditions, which included dense fog, strong winds, and snowfall exceeding two meters in depth. The search operation involved the use of thermal imaging cameras, sniffer dogs, drones, and a Black Hawk helicopter.
Mr. Smyth's family released a statement expressing their devastation and gratitude toward the Salvamont Mountain Rescue team, the University of Bristol, and the police for their tireless efforts. They requested privacy as they focus on bringing him home. Forensic enquiries are currently underway to formally identify the body before it is repatriated to Bristol.
