Gracindo Jr. a prominent Brazilian actor and director, died on Tuesday night at the age of 83. The news was confirmed by his press team and his friend, actor Leonardo Brício, who stated that Gracindo Jr. passed away at home in Rio de Janeiro surrounded by his wife and children. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Born Epaminondas Xavier Gracindo, he was the son of the renowned actor Paulo Gracindo. His career spanned over five decades across radio, theater, cinema, and television. He began his professional journey at age 15 in 1959 with Rádio Nacional and debuted in theater in 1961 with the play A Escada. He was among the first contracted talents for TV Globo, which launched in 1965, and appeared in early productions such as Rosinha do Sobrado.
One of his most significant roles was as João Maciel in the 1976 novela O Casarão, where he played the younger version of a character played by his father. He also worked alongside Paulo Gracindo in O Bem Amado and Os Ossos do Barão. Throughout his television career, he worked for TV Globo, TV Manchete, and Record, appearing in notable works such as Dona Beija, O Salvador da Pátria, and Celebridade. In addition to acting, he worked behind the camera as a director for the program Os Trapalhões and supervised Globo's 6 p.m. novela block starting in 1978.
His cinematic contributions include films such as Os Homens que eu Tive and A Selva. Beyond his artistic achievements, one report noted that he was a member of the Communist Party and was banned from working in radio by the military dictatorship following the coup.
