At least two people died early Saturday morning after a building under construction collapsed onto a residence on Rua Tequici in the Penha neighborhood of São Paulo's East Zone. Authorities confirmed the deceased were two women, one of whom was pregnant. Four people were rescued from the rubble, including a child and an adult. The Fire Department initially reported five deaths but later corrected the figure to two. Search operations continued as officials worked to determine if more victims remained under the debris.
The collapse occurred during a period of intense rainfall across the state. While the Civil Defense stated it was not yet possible to confirm if the building collapse was related to the weather, other severe incidents were reported. In the capital, a residence collapsed in Sapopemba, leaving 24 people displaced, and two homes collapsed in Jabaquara. Additional incidents occurred in Juquitiba, where a man suffered injuries when a residence collapsed.
Weather data showed significant rainfall and wind. The highest wind gust was recorded in Piraju at 92.6 km/h, while the capital saw gusts up to 51.5 km/h. Heavy rainfall was recorded in several cities, with Cotia and Santo André among the highest. The Civil Defense had issued 15 Cell Broadcast alerts to various regions of the state, warning residents of strong rains, intense wind gusts, and hail. A crisis cabinet has been active since Friday afternoon to monitor the meteorological conditions.
