Chinese automaker Chery plans to invest 10 billion yuan, or approximately 1.49 billion dollars, into the development of solid state batteries. Chairman Yin Tongyue announced the investment during the World Power Battery Conference in Sichuan province, stating that the company will deploy 1,200 engineers to focus on innovation in the field. Chery intends to begin testing these batteries next year, with the goal of achieving an energy density of 400 watt hours per kilogram, which is double that of batteries currently used in electric vehicles.
Solid state batteries use solid electrolytes to conduct ions between electrodes instead of the liquid or gel materials found in conventional lithium ion batteries. Analysts suggest this technology offers higher energy density, longer driving ranges, and improved safety by reducing the risk of overheating or fire. Despite these promises, no solid state batteries have been used in mass produced electric vehicles. Yin Tongyue emphasized that the company will not install new battery technologies in its vehicles unless they are proven to be absolutely safe.
Chery is currently China's largest vehicle exporter. While some premium Chinese models from Nio use semi solid state batteries, industry experts such as CATL founder Robin Zeng have suggested that large scale production of fully solid state units may not arrive until 2030.
