China and South Korea have both lodged protests against Japan following the release of its annual defense white paper. The Japanese government reiterated claims that the Northern Territories and Takeshima, also known as Dokdo, are inherent Japanese territories and that these territorial issues remain unresolved. South Korea strongly protested the inclusion of these claims, asserting that Dokdo is an integral part of its territory historically, geographically, and under international law. The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the deputy head of mission at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul to communicate this protest and urged Japan to withdraw the claims. The white paper included maps labeling Dokdo as Takeshima and identifying the surrounding waters as Japanese territorial waters. Simultaneously, the Japanese government described South Korea as a partner and important neighbor and expressed plans to work with allies to respond to military cooperation between North Korea, China, and Russia.
