Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Becomes Director's Highest Grossing Film

Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's 'The Odyssey' has become the highest grossing film of the director's career, surpassing $1.1 billion at the global box office. Released on July 17, the film has earned $1.104 billion worldwide, including $461.1 million in North America and $643.6 million internationally. This milestone moves it past 'The Dark Knight Rises', which earned $1.085 billion in 2012. The film has also set a record as the highest grossing IMAX release of all time, generating $289.3 million from those screenings.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film follows the Greek king of Ithaca on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. The movie has become the highest grossing film of the careers of Damon, Hathaway, and Pattinson. Produced by Universal Pictures with a reported production budget of $250 million, it is one of three Universal films to cross the billion dollar mark this year, alongside 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' and the Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael'.

In South Korea, 'The Odyssey' debuted at the top of the weekend box office, dethroning 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'. According to the Korean Film Council, the film added 1,333,437 admissions over a single weekend, bringing its total in the region to 1,874,731.

While most reports focused on the commercial success of the film, a center left outlet provided an educational context by discussing the historical and literary origins of Homer's original epic. This coverage highlighted the ongoing academic debates regarding the historical accuracy of the Trojan War and the identity of Homer himself.
