Civil Defense Issues Heavy Rain Alert for São Paulo State

The São Paulo State Civil Defense has issued a weather alert for Wednesday (9) and Thursday (10), warning of moderate to heavy rain across various regions of the state. The forecast includes potential lightning, wind gusts, and isolated hail, with the eastern strip of the state expected to be most affected. In the metropolitan region of São Paulo, the North Coast, and several interior cities, rainfall totals could reach up to 70 mm, with wind gusts ranging from 40 to 65 km/h. In other regions, including Bauru and Sorocaba, accumulations are expected between 20 and 40 mm.

Meteorological factors contributing to this weather include a low pressure area, a cold front associated with an extratropical cyclone on the southern coast of Brazil, and a flow of hot and humid air from the Amazon known as low level jets. In the city of São Paulo, the CGE reports that September precipitation has already reached 78.3 mm, which is 18.6 percent above the monthly average of 66 mm.

Impacts are already being felt on the North Coast. In Caraguatatuba, residents reported flooding in the Jardim Jaqueira, Indaiá, and Massaguaçu neighborhoods on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the city of São Sebastião has been placed on alert due to saturated soil and the risk of landslides in hillside areas. As a preventive measure, the city government suspended a scheduled evacuation simulation in Boiçucanga. Authorities have warned that strong winds may cause falling trees, power outages, and disruptions to ferry operations. Residents in risk areas are advised to remain vigilant and contact emergency services at 199 or 193 if necessary.
