CNBB Calls for Transparency and Ethics Code Amid STF Crisis

The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) issued a document on Thursday expressing concern over the current crisis involving the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The organization called for the resolution of the impasse through the court's plenary sessions, emphasizing that proceedings should be collegiate, public, and transparent so that society can understand the foundations of the decisions. The CNBB further advocated for the implementation of a Code of Ethics currently under development by the STF to establish clear conduct parameters and prevent conflicts of interest within the judiciary.

The bishops stated that no one is above the law and that the clarification of potential irregularities is essential for maintaining the authority of democratic institutions. This call for accountability comes during an election year, leading the CNBB to warn that institutional crises and suspicions should not be instrumentalized for political party interests. The entity urged all branches of government and society to promote dialogue to ensure free and reliable elections.

One report provides additional context regarding the origin of the crisis, noting it began after Justice André Mendonça lifted the secrecy of messages between Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Daniel Vorcaro, the owner of Banco Master. According to that report, Justice Moraes subsequently attempted to include Justice Mendonça in a fake news inquiry, citing irregularities in the handling of the Master case and INSS fraud investigations. Justice Edson Fachin has since intervened, scheduling a plenary session for October 15 to evaluate the request for an investigation into Justice Moraes.
