PT Proposes Judicial Reforms and STF Term Limits Amid Institutional Crisis

The Workers Party (PT) approved a resolution on Thursday defending tougher penalties for corruption, embezzlement, and influence peddling when committed by judges and ministers. The party is calling for a reform of the judiciary that includes the introduction of term limits for members of superior courts and the implementation of stricter quarantine periods to ensure ethical conduct. Additionally, the PT proposes creating seats for civil society representatives within the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP) to increase social control over the justice system.

The resolution also demands an end to excessive salaries and privileges, as well as the creation of formal codes of ethics for tribunals. According to the party, these measures are necessary because the Supreme Federal Court (STF) is currently engaged in a war that has left society astonished. The PT has specifically called for the end of secrecy surrounding the Banco Master case and requested transparency in investigations regarding funds used for a film about former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Internal party assessments suggest these proposals are a reaction to a shifting political landscape. Party leadership believes the current crisis at the STF and recent polling data pose a risk to President Lula's reelection campaign, particularly with the growth of candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. In response, the campaign intends to energize its base through more street actions and a shift in tone for radio and television advertisements, focusing on government achievements in education and public security.
