Colombian President Requests US Tariff Suspension Following Deadly Earthquake

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has requested that United States President Donald Trump temporarily suspend tariffs on Colombian products to aid the nation's recovery from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake. The tremor struck on Monday, August 10, with the epicenter in the Chocó region. According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the disaster has left 294 people dead, 320 missing, and 3,935 injured. The earthquake destroyed 14,493 homes and damaged 81,506 others, severely impacting the cities of Cali and Pereira. In Pereira, officials report that 58,000 children are out of school because 165 educational facilities are in critical condition.

President de la Espriella, who took office one week ago, stated that he spoke with President Trump for ten minutes. He asked for the suspension of tariffs that rose from 10 percent to 12.5 percent in late July. While coffee and oil were largely exempt from these increases, the Colombian leader argued that relief is necessary for business owners facing an apocalyptic economic situation. The United States has provided 26.5 million dollars in aid and rescue teams. Other assistance has arrived from Israel, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Chile, the latter sending 10 tons of humanitarian supplies via a FACH aircraft.

The response to the disaster has been viewed differently across political perspectives. Center left outlets highlight the humanitarian crisis, noting shortages of food and blankets in shelters and criticizing the government for initially refusing rescue aid from countries like Mexico. Center right outlets emphasize the strategic alliance between de la Espriella and Trump, framing the tariff request as a necessary step for national reconstruction and noting the president's efforts to distance his administration from the economic policies of his predecessor, Gustavo Petro. Beyond the earthquake, Colombia is facing additional emergencies. The UNGRD has recorded over 30 active forest fires, exacerbated by an extreme El Niño phenomenon. Economic estimates from the firm Ingeniar suggest total physical losses from the earthquake amount to approximately 30 trillion pesos, or 9.5 billion dollars, with the Valle del Cauca department suffering the highest absolute losses.
