Delhi High Court Denies Vinesh Phogat Participation in World Championship Selection Trials

The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to allow wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Senior World Championships. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued an interim order stating that the eligibility criteria prescribed by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in a September 7 circular apply uniformly to all athletes. The court noted that granting an exemption to Phogat alone without first adjudicating the policy could result in unequal treatment of other athletes.

Phogat, who became a mother in July 2025, sought permission to compete in the trials scheduled for September 14. Her legal team argued that the WFI framework is arbitrary because it makes eligibility dependent on participation in specific qualifying competitions, which effectively excludes athletes returning from maternity leave. Her lawyer stated that this lack of accommodation could potentially end her career as an athlete. In response, the WFI argued that Phogat has not been banned and remains eligible to compete at state and national levels to progress through the selection process.

While denying the interim relief, the court acknowledged that Phogat's circumstances regarding pregnancy and postpartum recovery require consideration. The court suggested that the WFI should consider framing guidelines to ensure women athletes returning from maternity are not disadvantaged, while balancing the interests of the athlete with the interests of the country. Phogat has also sought a stay on the WFI circular and the formulation of a structured framework for athletes returning to competitive sports after pregnancy.
