Two unidentified men stole a valuable piece of jewelry from the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna on Tuesday afternoon. The suspects entered the building posing as visitors and shattered a glass display case before fleeing the scene. The theft occurred around 2:00 PM in front of numerous visitors. Vienna police launched a large scale search operation in the city center and are currently reviewing surveillance footage. The regional criminal office and the federal police unit specializing in cultural property crimes are leading the investigation.

While the museum provided limited details, police released an image of the stolen item. According to museum website information and auction records, the piece is a royal necklace from the French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels. The necklace contains 673 diamonds totaling more than 200 carats and formerly belonged to Queen Nasli of Egypt. The item was last sold at a New York auction in 2015 for approximately 4.3 million dollars. The jewelry was part of the Glanzstücke exhibition, which features over 300 creations from the Van Cleef & Arpels house.
