DR Congo Battles Record Ebola Outbreak Amid Vaccine Uncertainty

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing the worst Ebola outbreak in its history, with 6,041 confirmed cases and 2,911 deaths recorded as of August 31. The epidemic has affected six of the country's 26 provinces, with the northeast province of Ituri serving as the epicenter. This current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which is a different species from the Zaire ebolavirus that caused most previous outbreaks in the country.

Authorities have begun a vaccination campaign in Kisangani, and 50,000 doses have been received. However, the vaccine being administered, Ervebo, is approved for the Zaire strain rather than the Bundibugyo strain. Consequently, its effectiveness against the current virus remains to be evaluated, and the World Health Organization is supporting a clinical trial to assess its protection.

As children return to school, the government is implementing a tiered risk system. In high risk areas, pupils will study from home using radio programs and printed materials. Despite these measures, parents and teachers in regions like Bunia have expressed concern that school reopenings could fuel the spread of the disease.
