Earthquakes Cause Widespread School Damage in Colombia and Spain

Recent seismic activity has caused significant damage to educational infrastructure in both Colombia and Spain, prompting different emergency responses. In Colombia, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10 affected between 400,000 and 500,000 students and damaged 1,631 educational sites across 19 departments, including Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Tolima, and Risaralda. To address this, the Alberto Merani Social Foundation has proposed the installation of approximately 2,000 geodesic megadomes. These structures would serve as temporary classrooms for up to 250 students each, providing a transition while permanent schools, which can take three to five years to rebuild, are constructed.

Meanwhile, in Granada, Spain, the City Council is concluding emergency repairs on 38 municipal schools following a series of earthquakes that began in mid August. The government allocated 525,000 euros from an emergency fund to ensure the facilities were safe for the start of the school year on Thursday. While the government spokesperson, Jorge Savedra, stated that technical reports confirming safety would be delivered to school directors, political tensions have emerged. The socialist group claimed that some directors had not yet received this documentation, while the Vox group criticized the government for the conditions of residents displaced from the Zaidín neighborhood.
