Eight people were injured on September 9 when a Ukrainian unmanned surface vessel struck a port embankment in the Russian Black Sea resort town of Sochi. Footage verified by Reuters shows an explosion and people screaming, while other videos posted by residents show a fiery blast near a beach promenade and people seeking shelter. The strike occurred near the Chernomorskaya Zharovnya restaurant, which was partially destroyed, and interrupted a concert by Tatyana Bulanova, a singer who has supported the invasion of Ukraine.
Sochi is a popular vacation destination and the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. It also houses an official summer residence for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This event follows a series of attacks on September 3 and 4, during which Ukrainian drones reportedly damaged a Russian naval vessel and an oil depot near the city. Ukrainian forces have also targeted other Russian ports, including Novorossiysk and Ust Luga, while Russia has targeted the Ukrainian port of Odesa.
