Election Commission schedules bypolls for six constituencies on October 6

The Election Commission of India has announced that byelections for five Assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency will be held on October 6, 2026. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 9, and the entire process must be completed by October 11. The bypolls cover seats in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, West Bengal, and Assam.

In Assam, the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat became vacant after Pradyut Bordoloi resigned. While both sources agree on the resignation, the center right source specifies that Bordoloi won on a Congress ticket before crossing over to the Bharatiya Janata Party and winning the Dispur assembly seat.

In Tamil Nadu, the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly seats fell vacant following the resignations of AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama to join the ruling TVK. The center right source adds that this move followed a floor test where a faction of AIADMK legislators backed the TVK government led by actor politician Vijay.

In Puducherry, Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy vacated the Thattanchavady Assembly seat after winning both that and the Mangalam seat. In West Bengal, bypolls are required for the Nandigram and Rejinagar seats. Suvendu Adhikari vacated Nandigram after winning two seats, while Humayun Kabir resigned from Rejinagar. The center right source notes that Kabir, a former TMC leader, left to form the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, and mentions speculation that Mamata Banerjee might contest the Nandigram seat.

The Election Commission stated that the special intensive revision of electoral rolls for these constituencies was completed between February 10 and February 28, though updates will continue until the nomination deadline.
