Entrepreneur Valter Lavitola Confesses to Ordering Bomb Attack on Journalist Sigfrido Ranucci

Valter Lavitola, a 60 year old entrepreneur and former publisher, has confessed to being the mastermind behind a bombing targeting the home of investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. The attack occurred on October 16, 2025, south of Rome, when a bomb containing one kilogram of explosives detonated, destroying the cars of Ranucci and his daughter, Michela. While the daughter was not harmed, the event caused significant alarm in the Italian media and political scene. Lavitola was arrested on Monday and admitted his role during a five hour interrogation at Rebibbia prison.

Lavitola claims he ordered the attack for Ranucci's own benefit. According to his lawyer, Sergio Cola, Lavitola believed Ranucci was in danger and wanted to force the state to increase the journalist's security detail. Lavitola asserted that Ranucci's protection grew from two agents to eight following the blast. However, Ranucci's lawyer, Roberto De Vita, dismissed this claim as a theater of madness, noting that Ranucci had already maintained continuous security since 2021 and already possessed high popularity.

Investigators believe the true motive may be linked to Lavitola's ambition to help Ranucci enter politics. Prosecutors cited chat messages where Lavitola told Ranucci he could become President of the Council within two years. The investigation also identified four executors from Avellino and a Portuguese middleman, Gomes Clesio Tavares, who is currently a fugitive. Authorities are seeking the extradition of Tavares.

Ranucci and Lavitola had been close friends for years, often dining together every two weeks. This friendship began after Ranucci's investigative program, Report, aired a segment in 2019 regarding Lavitola's career. When asked by journalists if Ranucci was aware of the plan to bomb his own home, Lavitola's lawyer declined to comment.
