EU and Allies Condemn Russia Following Attempted Drone Attack at Leipzig Airport

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany bore all the hallmarks of state sponsored terrorism. The incident involved a drone laden with explosives and a detonator discovered at the airport, which serves as a civilian freight and NATO logistics hub. German authorities have attributed the attack to Russia, characterizing it as part of a hybrid warfare campaign intended to intimidate and divide European nations supporting Ukraine. Russia has denied any involvement and summoned Germany's top diplomat in Moscow.

During an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland, several officials called for increased pressure on Moscow. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that Russia must live with the consequences of its escalation and called for increased air defense support for Ukraine before winter. Other ministers from Romania, Finland, and Lithuania expressed solidarity with Germany, noting a rise in hybrid threats and drone incursions across Europe. The United Kingdom also stated that Russian attempts to divide the alliance would fail.

In response to the event, the EU is working on a sanctions package that may include over 1,600 listings related to Russia's military complex. Germany announced it would close the Russian consulate general in Bonn and terminate its agreement with the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. Some reports indicate that investigators have identified two suspects: a Russian born man with a Latvian passport and a man from Belarus with a Russian passport.
