German authorities are investigating two separate acts of sabotage targeting electrical substations in North Rhine Westphalia and Brandenburg that occurred on Tuesday. In Bergheim, near Cologne, investigators found six launch devices in a field used to propel conductive wire over power lines to trigger a short circuit. This incident caused five brown coal blocks at the Neurath and Niederaußem plants to fail, totaling approximately 4,200 megawatts of capacity. In Brandenburg, attackers targeted the Turnow Preilack substation near the Jänschwalde power plant using more than a dozen rocket like devices to cause short circuits. Despite the technical failures, officials stated that there were no general power outages for households and the energy supply remained stable.

In North Rhine Westphalia, Interior Minister Herbert Reul stated that the perpetrators targeted critical infrastructure to attack the country. In Brandenburg, police are investigating the possibility of a terrorist organization. Authorities in both regions are exploring two primary theories: sabotage directed by a foreign state or the involvement of left wing extremists. Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann noted that the technical know how required for the installation suggests the perpetrators were on site days before the attacks, though he added there is currently no specific evidence of foreign intelligence agency involvement.
