Europe's Tallest Virgin Mary Statue Unveiled in Poland

The tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in Europe has been inaugurated in the small village of Konotopie in central Poland. Standing at 55.6 meters, the monument is taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The structure consists of a 40.6 meter statue atop a 15 meter pedestal shaped like a crown. The monument features an observation deck located 15 meters up on the pedestal and will be free for the public to access.

The project was funded by Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, a wealthy local couple. Roman Karkosik, an investor and businessman, reportedly spent approximately 100 million zloty, or 23 million euros, on the construction. The couple stated the monument is an expression of gratitude to God and Mary. Construction took 18 months, and the concrete statue weighs approximately 60,000 tons. The ceremony on August 15 was attended by thousands of people, including former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa.

Local authorities and the community hope the landmark will become a major site of pilgrimage and tourism. While the statue is the tallest of its kind in Europe, it remains shorter than the 98 meter Mother of All Asia Tower of Peace in the Philippines. It also surpasses another large religious monument in Poland, the Christ the King statue in Świebodzin.

In contrast, a center left source highlighted critical views of the project, including a comment from a Dominican priest who described the statue as a King Kong in the field and likened the project to the biblical worship of the Golden Calf.
