The far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won a historic victory in the regional elections in Saxony Anhalt on Sunday, securing approximately 44 percent of the vote. This result marks the first time since World War II that a far right party has come this close to governing a German state. Despite the landslide, the AfD fell short of an absolute majority, winning 39 of the 83 seats in the regional parliament.
