Five teenage boys died and four other people were seriously injured in a head-on collision on the M9 motorway in the Republic of Ireland. The crash occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday near Athy at junction 3. Emergency services reported that a vehicle was traveling southbound on the northbound carriageway when it collided with another car.
The second vehicle carried three women in their 20s and 30s and a seven year old boy. According to reports, the family was traveling to a wedding in England at the time of the accident. Two of the women are in critical condition, while the third woman and the child are in serious condition.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly described the incident as horrific. He stated that in some cases, vehicles are being driven on the wrong side of motorways to gain likes on social media. Kelly noted that this reckless behavior is appalling given the devastating impact on innocent people. The incident has been referred to Fiosrú, the police ombudsman. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the crash and have appealed for dashcam footage from witnesses.
