Five Teenagers Killed in Wrong Way Motorway Crash in Ireland

Five teenage boys died and four people were seriously injured following a head on collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare, Ireland. The crash occurred around 03:00 local time on Sunday between junction 3 and junction 4 at Moone. One of the vehicles was traveling the wrong way down the motorway. The injured party consists of a seven year old boy and three women, two of whom are in critical condition. It is believed the family was traveling to the airport for a holiday. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin both described the driving as irresponsible and dangerous. Both officials noted that such reckless behavior is sometimes carried out for social media likes. The Garda Representative Association stated that no pursuit was taking place before the collision and called for tougher legislation and pursuit training for officers. While the center outlet focused on the grief of the community and the call for police reform, the center left outlet highlighted reports that the teenagers may have stolen the car. According to that report, the youths may be linked to a group known as the Lucky Dip Gang, which is alleged to steal cars for joyriding and social media videos rather than for sale.
