Florida Primaries Highlight Battle for Control of Congress and State Leadership

Florida voters are heading to the polls for primary elections that will determine candidates for the governorship and several congressional seats. Republican Representative Byron Donalds is running for governor with the endorsement of Donald Trump. Donalds is considered the favorite to win the Republican primary, which would make him the first Black Republican governor in the United States since the Reconstruction era. He faces a crowded field that includes the state's lieutenant governor and a former speaker of the state House. One challenger, James Fishback, has criticized Donalds on social media as a slave to corporate masters.

The race to replace Donalds in the U.S. House features several unconventional candidates. These include former Representative Chris Collins, who was pardoned by Trump after an insider trading conviction; former North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn; and John Strand, who was imprisoned for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot. Meanwhile, Republican Representative Cory Mills is facing a primary challenge amid allegations of misconduct.

On the Democratic side, the Florida Division of Elections has confirmed a wide range of candidates for the Senate, the House, and state offices. For the U.S. Senate nomination, Angie Nixon and retired Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman are the two candidates. The gubernatorial race includes former U.S. Representative David Jolly, who has named Gwen Graham as his running mate, as well as Dotie Joseph and several others. In the House, Representative Jared Moskowitz is facing a challenge from the left by Oliver Larkin.

A left leaning source emphasizes the unlikely backgrounds of the GOP candidates, describing some as a pardoned felon and an insurrectionist, while noting that Donalds is facing a racist campaign from a far right challenger.
