Football fans and players paid tribute to two Cleveland Police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, who were killed in a head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough on 22 August. The officers died when their police car collided with a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way. Five people in the other vehicle also died: Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17.
Ahead of a Championship match between Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion at Riverside Stadium, players and fans observed a minute's silence and applause while images of the officers were displayed on screens. Hartlepool United also held a two minute silence before their National League game against Eastleigh on Friday evening. Middlesbrough FC issued a statement praising the dedication of the officers and the vital role of the Cleveland Police force in protecting the local community.
Investigation into the crash has led to 24 arrests. In a broader crackdown on alleged organized crime, Cleveland Police arrested four men aged 35, 25, 40, and 21 on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, arson, and a drugs offence. Detectives confirmed that a separate house fire that killed a seven year old girl and her aunt is not linked to the A66 crash. Hundreds of extra officers have been deployed to support the Middlesbrough and County Durham area following these incidents.
Middlesbrough mayor Chris Cooke stated that Cleveland Police has been hardest hit by funding reductions, noting a decrease of over 10 percent in full time equivalent officers. He argued that police funding should follow need rather than population size. Additionally, the King sent letters of condolence to the families of the fallen officers.
