Ashis Banerjee, a former deputy speaker of the West Bengal assembly, was found dead on Sunday morning at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Rampurhat, Birbhum. Police reported that a purported suicide note was recovered from the scene, and the body has been sent for a post mortem examination to determine the exact circumstances of his death.
According to a TMC spokesperson, Nilanjan Das, the note suggests that Banerjee felt he was being falsely implicated in corruption cases. Banerjee was a five time MLA who represented Rampurhat from 2001 until 2026. He previously held ministerial portfolios in school education and agriculture under the Mamata Banerjee government. In June of this year, he resigned as chairman of the party's Birbhum district core committee, following a loss in the 2026 Assembly elections where he was defeated by the BJP's Dhruva Saha by more than 24,000 votes.
