France Records Thousands of Excess Deaths Amid Record Heatwaves and Drought

France recorded 1,243 excess deaths between July 3 and 22 during a period of exceptionally high temperatures, according to the Ministry of Health and Santé publique France. This brings the provisional total of excess deaths for the summer of 2026 to approximately 7,300. This total includes 5,764 deaths from a more intense heatwave between June 17 and July 2, as well as 300 deaths from an initial period of heat between May 24 and May 28. Health officials noted that nearly three quarters of the excess deaths were among people aged 75 and older, with a notable signal of deaths occurring at home.

France has experienced 52 days of heatwaves since mid June, which is a record for the country. This duration exceeds the 33 days recorded in 2022 and the 22 days recorded in 2003. Météo France reported that July was the hottest month ever recorded in the Hexagon. The extreme heat has been accompanied by a historic drought that has dried up streams, killed thousands of fish in the lake of la Gioule, and caused a sharp drop in vegetable production.
