French astronaut Sophie Adenot went into space for a second time on Tuesday to complete a mission left unfinished a week prior. The extravehicular activity began at 2:35 p.m. Paris time and was expected to last approximately six and a half hours. Adenot and her American teammate, Anil Menon, aimed to replace a communication antenna known as Space-to-Ground, which transmits high speed data between the station and the mission control center in Houston.
The first attempt to replace the antenna was delayed by stubborn bolts and connectors. NASA stated that this scenario had been anticipated and praised the astronauts for their resilience. In addition to the antenna, Adenot and Menon may attempt to replace a retroreflector if time permits; otherwise, that task may be moved to a maintenance outing scheduled for September 1. The pair were assisted by crew members Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, who operated the Canadarm2 robotic arm.
Adenot, a 44 year old engineer and former test pilot, became the first French woman to perform a space walk on August 18. She is the second French person in history to fly in space, following Claudie Haigneré. President Emmanuel Macron described her first outing as a source of French pride.
