German Navy Successfully Tests Israeli Lora Long Range Missile System

The German Navy has successfully completed a previously secret test of the Israeli Lora missile system in the North Atlantic. A frigate fired the ballistically launched weapon in the sea area between Ireland and Iceland, leading the German government to advance plans for the procurement of the system. The Lora, which stands for Long Range Attack, has a range of more than 500 kilometers and is designed to strike strategic targets deep in enemy territory from mobile or maritime platforms.

Navy Inspector Jan Christian Kaack described the event as marine history and stated that the test represents a new chapter in deterrence and defense readiness at sea. The Lora system differs from the existing Taurus cruise missile in its flight path. While the Taurus flies low to the ground following the terrain, the Lora rises steeply in a parabolic arc to strike targets quickly. According to the manufacturer, Israel Aerospace Industries, any identified target within range can be destroyed within ten minutes.

The procurement is part of broader armament programs initiated after the Russian invasion of Ukraine to deter further Russian aggression. This effort follows recent concerns among allies, including a failed attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport for which the German government held Russia responsible. To further close gaps in long range precision capabilities, Germany also intends to purchase and station US Tomahawk medium range missiles, which have a range of up to 2,500 kilometers.

Both reports present the event as a strategic necessity for national defense.
