Guatemalan authorities have declared that the eruption of the Fuego volcano has ended following 50 hours of activity. The event forced between 1,600 and 1,700 people from 18 communities in the departments of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango, and Escuintla to evacuate to shelters. Many residents stayed in a temporary refuge located in the central plaza of San Juan Alotenango, Sacatepéquez. While evacuees have begun returning to their homes, authorities have warned residents to remain cautious as the volcano could erupt again.
Reports indicate that the decision to evacuate was influenced by the memory of a devastating 2018 eruption that killed over 200 people and left 229 missing. Some residents expressed fear of leaving their homes due to high local criminality and the risk of losing belongings. In several instances, women and children sought refuge in shelters while men remained behind to guard their properties. Upon their return, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) provided food to affected families.
