Gunman Killed by Police After Deadly Minneapolis Apartment Shooting

A man identified as Carlton Johnson was killed by police after carrying out a shooting at a Minneapolis apartment building that left two residents dead and five others wounded. The attack began outside the building during a custody handoff where Johnson shot a woman believed to be the mother of his child. He then shot two building employees before taking an elevator to the ninth floor, where he killed two residents. Johnson was killed in an exchange of fire with police officers. Three officers were hospitalized with injuries but are expected to make full recoveries.

Officials stated that Johnson had a history of warning signs. Court documents indicate he was facing eviction and had threatened a fellow resident with a gun in previous months. A resident, Julius Bailey, described Johnson as belligerent and known for showing off his weapon. Another resident, Chris Miller, reported seeing someone with a handgun in the hallway earlier in the week.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty noted that Johnson had been investigated in June after displaying a handgun. However, no charges were filed at that time because the weapon remained in his waistband and the prosecutor's office found insufficient evidence to prove a charge beyond a reasonable doubt. Minneapolis Police confirmed that Johnson had a legal permit to carry the weapon during that June encounter.

Council member Elizabeth Shaffer said 16 displaced residents sheltered in a church overnight with support from the Red Cross. She noted that her staff had not received previous constituent complaints regarding safety or building management. Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, described the event as a situation where domestic violence was central to the tragedy.
