Hawaii is bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Lowell, a major Category 3 storm expected to pass near the islands starting Monday night. The United States National Hurricane Center has issued emergency hurricane and tropical storm warnings for the island chain, with forecasters predicting the storm will skirt just west of Niihau and Kauai. Residents and visitors are warned to prepare for severe windstorms, major rains statewide, and possible mudslides.
Mayor Derek Kawakami of Kauai has issued an emergency proclamation. Local officials warn that Kauai could face coastal flooding of up to 3 feet due to storm surges and high tides. The National Weather Service also indicated that tornadoes could accompany the tropical cyclone, typically occurring in rain bands away from the storm center. Rainfall totals could reach between 150mm and 250mm, with maximum peaks of 360mm. The Big Island is expected to see between 100mm and 200mm of rain.
Hurricane Lowell formed as a tropical depression on August 27, driven by warm ocean temperatures and an active El Nino pattern. The storm has fluctuated in intensity between Category 3 and Category 5, reaching maximum sustained winds of 195km/h. It is currently located approximately 895km southwest of Honolulu.
In response to the threat, Kauai's Emergency Management Agency has urged residents to stock up on food, water, and fuel, and to prepare for potential power outages. Local authorities have also warned of life threatening surf and rip current conditions, advising people to stay out of the ocean.
