Home Secretary Urges Police to Use Full Powers Against Anti-Migrant Protesters

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has instructed police chiefs to make full use of their powers to curb anti-migrant protests following a weekend of disorder in Dover and Portsmouth. During a meeting on Thursday, Mahmood told senior officers that the use of balaclavas and black clothing by protesters created a fear factor and indicated obvious malign intent. She emphasized the need for strong deterrence and improved intelligence to deal robustly with anyone committing criminal offences.

The directive follows protests on Saturday in Dover and Sunday in Portsmouth where hundreds of masked individuals blocked roads and disrupted port access. In Portsmouth, protesters attempted to block migrants being driven away for processing after the RNLI rescued 120 asylum seekers. Reports indicate that police officers were assaulted and RNLI volunteers faced unacceptable abuse, leading the charity to warn staff not to wear its branding. No arrests were made during either event, and Kent Police admitted they had not fully assessed warning calls prior to the Dover protest.

Police chiefs are now considering the use of powers granted by the Crime and Policing Act to create mask-free zones, which can carry fines of up to 1,000 pounds or imprisonment. The government highlighted the emergence of the Patriot Platform, a group led by Daniel Thomas, as a source of these new tactics. In preparation for further predicted disruption this weekend, forces have initiated an enhanced and coordinated approach to intelligence gathering.
