IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Across Maharashtra and Gujarat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Maharashtra and Gujarat due to a low pressure area moving west northwestwards. In Maharashtra, Mumbai is under an orange alert according to one report, while another mentions a yellow alert for the city and surrounding districts including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. The IMD warns that these weather systems will bring thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kilometers per hour in isolated places. Severe weather is expected to cause localized inundation, disrupted transport networks, and potential flash floods in low lying urban areas. In Gujarat, the IMD forecasts widespread rain over Saurashtra and Kutch from September 13 to 15, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely on September 13. Other affected regions include West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and parts of East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab. The IMD has advised residents to avoid sheltering under tall trees, unplug electronics, and stay away from open water bodies. Farmers have been urged to harvest matured crops immediately and secure stored grains. The weather system is expected to move across southeast Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat over the next 24 hours.
