India's drug regulator, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), has alerted state authorities to be vigilant regarding a counterfeit batch of the anti rabies vaccine Abhayrab. The warning follows the discovery that batch KE25012 failed potency tests, meaning it did not contain enough antigen to provide protective immunity. The CDSCO traced the substandard vials to an unlicensed flat in Mukherjee Nagar, North Delhi, where police and drug inspectors conducted a raid on April 22. Four people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Indian Immunologicals Ltd (IIL), the company that sells Abhayrab, stated that the seized vials were not manufactured by their Human Biologicals Institute division. The company noted seventeen distinct differences between the seized vials and the authentic retention samples. These differences included blue caps instead of green caps, a misspelling of Louis Pasteur as L. Posteur, and an unverifiable QR code. Additionally, the seized vials were stored at room temperature despite labels requiring storage between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. The regulator confirmed that no part of this batch was exported to other countries.
