Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

India's retail inflation rose to 4.8% in August from 4.4% in July, according to government data. Wholesale inflation also increased to 9.9% from 9.7% in the previous month. The rise in retail inflation was largely driven by higher food prices, which increased to 5.9% from 5.5%. Specific staples such as garlic, onion, and ginger saw sharp price increases, while inflation in food serving services rose to 8.4% from 7.7%. Transport inflation also saw a slight increase to 4.6% from 4.4%.

Wholesale inflation has remained near double digits for four consecutive months. This trend is attributed to the war in West Asia and the resulting blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which impacts India's imports of crude oil and natural gas. These disruptions have also spilled over into food prices, with wholesale food inflation rising to 7% in August.

Outlets with a center lean frame the increase as a signal for the Reserve Bank of India to consider a rate hike during its October meeting. In contrast, the outlet with a left lean focuses on the specific data points and the geopolitical drivers behind the rising costs.
