India Signs Agreement to Purchase US Javelin Anti Tank Missile Systems

The Indian Army has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance to purchase the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile system from the United States. US Ambassador Sergio Gor announced the agreement on Friday, describing it as a great step forward in the US-India defence relationship. The deal follows a 10 year defence framework agreement signed in October and comes after the US State Department approved a possible sale reportedly worth 45.7 million dollars. According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the request included 100 Javelin rounds, one fly-to-buy missile, and 25 command launch units along with related training and logistics support.

The Javelin is a man-portable, fire-and-forget weapon system produced by a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and RTX. It is designed to defeat armored vehicles and fortified positions using an infrared guidance system. The system features a soft launch mechanism that allows it to be fired from confined spaces and a top-attack mode that strikes targets from above where armor is weakest. The missile is currently used by the US Army, the US Marine Corps, and several international customers, including Ukraine.

Ambassador Gor stated that the agreement opens the door to co-production possibilities and strengthens the defense industrial bases of both nations. While center-right sources emphasize the depth of US support for the Indian Army and the record high levels of engagement, center-left reporting notes that the defence relationship has remained steady despite recent diplomatic tensions regarding Russian oil purchases and US tariffs on Indian goods.
