Indonesian authorities have expanded a massive joint search and rescue operation for eight people who went missing in the Sunda Strait while traveling to cover the eruptive activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. The missing group consists of five journalists from Antara, Anadolu, Merdeka, iNews, and a freelancer, as well as a boat captain, a crew member, and a guide. The group departed from Pagedongan Pier in Carita on Monday, September 7, 2026, and lost contact shortly after. One report states the last communication was at 15:04 WIB, while another indicates a message was received by relatives at 6:13 pm on Monday.
The search operation, led by Basarnas and supported by the Indonesian Navy and police, has deployed hundreds of personnel and multiple vessels. These include the KRI Leuser, KRI Kerambit, and KRI Lepu. Searchers have divided the area into sectors to maximize coverage, though efforts have been hampered by strong winds and waves measuring between one and two meters. As of Thursday, September 10, the group remains missing.
The disappearance occurs amid elevated volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau, which has seen intermittent explosions of lava and ash. The Indonesian Geology Agency warned that the probability of further eruptions remains high. This volcanic activity previously caused airport closures that disrupted thousands of flights and led the government to shift some schools to online learning. Authorities had previously advised residents and tourists to stay at least 3 kilometers away from the active crater.
