Keely Hodgkinson and Audrey Werro Advance to European 800m Final After Dramatic Semi-Finals

Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson and Swiss athlete Audrey Werro have both qualified for the women's 800m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Hodgkinson won the second semi-final in 1:57.38, finishing ahead of the Netherlands' Femke Broeders-Bol. The final is highly anticipated as a three-way battle between Hodgkinson, Broeders-Bol, and Werro.

Werro's path to the final was marked by a dramatic fall while she was leading the first semi-final. The 22-year-old crashed face-down on the track on the final bend. Although she finished the race in last place while clutching her chest, she was reinstated into the final following a successful appeal. Video review showed that France's Anais Bourgoin hit Werro's right foot with her left hand. The fall also caused Lithuanian athlete Gabija Galvydyte to fall, and both Werro and Galvydyte were advanced to the final. Jemma Reekie of Great Britain won the first semi-final, capitalizing on Werro's tumble.

There will be 10 athletes in Friday's final instead of the usual nine. Other qualifiers include Swiss athletes Veronica Vancardo and Valentina Rosamilia, the latter of whom achieved a personal best of 1:58.16. Hodgkinson expressed her hope for a clean race without further falls, while Broeders-Bol noted that she feels relaxed despite the high expectations surrounding the event.
