Students at the Ukrainian Global School in Kyiv began their new school year on September 1 by attending classes in the institution's basement. The school decided to move classes permanently to the underground shelter because near constant Russian attacks on the capital made it unsustainable for students to move back and forth during air raid sirens. President Volodymyr Zelensky visited a school in Kyiv to mark the start of the academic year, meeting with children in a shelter during an active air raid alert.
According to CNN, air raid alerts occurred 60 times in Kyiv between midnight on Thursday and noon on Tuesday, lasting approximately 47 hours. Local authorities reported that at least 53 people were killed and more than 100 injured in Kyiv and the surrounding region during that period. The report notes that Russia has intensified its aerial campaign using jet powered drones that are faster and harder to intercept than previous models.
The war has significantly impacted school enrollment. Ukraine's Ministry of Education stated that 243,398 first graders started school this year, a decrease from the 400,000 who started in 2021. UNICEF reports that more than 1.8 million children are currently living abroad.
