Lawyer arrested for suspected murder of doctor in Paraná

A 25 year old lawyer, João Vitor Domingues Romeiro, was arrested in flagrante for the suspected murder of his 37 year old partner, Gassi Paola de Souza Mazia, in Maringá, Paraná. The crime occurred on Saturday night in the couple's apartment. Mazia, who worked as a doctor at a Basic Health Unit in Sarandi, died at the scene from stab wounds. According to police, the couple had a troubled relationship and had recently reconciled.

Reports indicate that Romeiro left the scene and drove to his mother's house in Mandaguari, approximately 30 kilometers away. He was found by police with injuries to his neck and was taken to a hospital under police escort. One source reports that Romeiro confessed to a family member that he had killed Mazia, though he allegedly claimed he had suffocated her.

The couple's eight month old son was left alone in the apartment following the crime. A relative of the victim discovered the infant crying outside the door and found Mazia's body upon entering. The child was not injured and is currently under the care of the victim's family.

Romeiro previously served as a legal advisor for the municipality of Marialva. The city administration announced his exoneration and issued a statement repudiating violence against women. The municipality of Sarandi also released a note of condolence, praising Mazia's professional commitment to public health and calling for an end to feminicide.
