Luke Bronin Defeats Incumbent John Larson in Connecticut Democratic Primary

Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin won a decisive victory over 14 term US Representative John Larson in the Democratic primary for Connecticut's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday. Bronin received 53 percent of the vote, while Larson received 34 percent. Two progressive candidates, Jillian Gilchrest and Ruth Fortune, who both accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, finished in third and fourth place. Together, Bronin and Larson won nearly 90 percent of the vote.

Bronin, who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes under the Obama Administration, focused his campaign on affordability and the need for new leadership. He will face Republican Amy Chai in the general election. The district includes Bristol, Hartford, and Torrington, and is home to 27,800 Jews, which represents 3.9 percent of the population according to the Berman Jewish Data Bank.

While Israel was not the primary focus of the race, the candidates differed on military aid. Larson defended his vote for US military aid to Israel, while Bronin stated that taxpayer money should not fund offensive military aid, though he supports defenses for civilians against rockets, missiles, and drones. Bronin also criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating the premier has done enormous damage to Israel's security and standing in the world.

Financial records from the Federal Election Commission and Open Secrets show that Bronin raised approximately 3.1 million dollars, primarily from billionaires and large firms. Larson raised 2.7 million dollars, relying more on PACs, including roughly 120,000 dollars in AIPAC linked donations.

Both reports note that the defeat of the AIPAC backed Larson reflects a trend where the pro Israel lobby group is increasingly viewed as politically toxic in Democratic primaries. However, they also emphasize that Israel was not a decisive factor in this specific Connecticut contest.
