A massive oil spill from the Caroline Bezengi, a tanker carrying approximately 800,000 barrels of sanctioned Russian crude, has reached the coastline of Oman. The spill is estimated by some sources to cover between 500 and 2,000 square kilometers, making it one of the most severe environmental incidents in the region in recent decades. The vessel, which is part of the Russian shadow fleet, reportedly experienced an incident on June 6 and ran aground off Al-Qibliyyah Island on June 21. Oil began leaking in July and has since drifted over 120 miles to affect the Ras Madrakah coastline. British maritime security firm Ambrey has begun salvage and containment operations with the help of the Omani air force, though efforts are being hampered by the annual monsoon season known as Khareef.

Iran has demanded compensation for this second spill, claiming a foreign bulk carrier was the source, while TankerTrackers suggested it resulted from an Iranian attack on the Minoan Pioneer.
