Manipuri Musician Beaten to Death in Delhi After Dispute Over Noise

Chongtham Vikram Singh, a 54 year old renowned guitarist and music teacher from Manipur, died on Monday morning after being assaulted by a group of men outside his home in Kilokari, southeast Delhi. The incident occurred late Sunday night when Singh went downstairs to dispose of garbage and objected to a group of people making noise and shouting. According to police and family members, an altercation ensued, and the group chased Singh back to the third floor of his apartment building where they overpowered and beat him. He was rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Okhla by his son but succumbed to injuries caused by blunt force trauma and haemorrhagic shock.

Delhi police have arrested seven adults and apprehended a 15 year old minor in connection with the murder. The arrested individuals include delivery and packaging workers from nearby dhabas and a pizza kiosk employee. Police registered the case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including a section pertaining to murder committed by a group acting in concert on specified grounds such as race, caste, community, or place of birth.

Singh was a prominent figure in the Manipuri music scene, having played for influential rock bands such as Phoenix and Eastern Dark in the 1980s. He had lived in Delhi for approximately 17 years, where he established a music school and taught at the Delhi School of Music. He is survived by his wife, Jyotsana, and their 20 year old son, Yaiphaba. His mother, Chongtham Kamala, is a celebrated Manipuri classical singer often called the Lata Mangeshkar of the Manipuri film industry.

The killing has drawn condemnation from political figures, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and AAP's Arvind Kejriwal. While some reports focus on the specific sequence of events and the legal charges, others highlight the broader social implications of the crime. Outlets with a center lean have analyzed the event as a potential failure of social cohesion and a reflection of everyday urban friction. Meanwhile, a center left outlet framed the killing as a manifestation of entrenched racial discrimination and marginalization faced by people from northeastern states in mainland India.
