Manipuri Musician Killed Following Assault in South Delhi

Chongtham Vikram Singh, a 54 year old well known musician from Manipur, died on Monday after being assaulted by a group of men outside his home in the Ashram area of south Delhi. According to police reports and family statements, the incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Sunday when Mr. Singh objected to a group of men shouting and drinking alcohol late at night. His 20 year old son reported seeing a group of people kicking and punching his father in the stairwell of their building. Mr. Singh was rushed to Holy Family Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Delhi Police have registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections relating to mob lynching and identity based group murders. Seven men and one 15 year old boy, identified as delivery or packaging workers from nearby dhabas, have been arrested or apprehended. The victim's son stated that the attackers had previously threatened his father for asking them to reduce their noise levels.

The death has sparked widespread condemnation and political reactions. Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh called for a fair probe, citing the safety of Northeastern residents in the capital. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned the safety of Northeast families in Delhi, while Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the dignity of every person from the Northeast is non negotiable. Conversely, Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra described the killing as a horrifying incident but asserted that it had no racist angle.

Rights activist Binalakshmi Nepram demanded life imprisonment for the accused and emphasized the government's responsibility to educate the public to respect people from northeastern states. The family intends to return Mr. Singh's body to Imphal for his funeral.
