Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão Denies Criminal Ties Amid STF Investigation

Governor Carlos Brandão of Maranhão has denied any involvement in a criminal organization currently under investigation by the Federal Police. The controversy follows a decision by Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Flávio Dino to make public three decisions related to the probe. The investigation involves allegations of public fund embezzlement, contract irregularities, obstruction of justice, and the 2022 murder of businessman João Bosco Sobrinho Pereira Oliveira in São Luís. The Federal Police suspect the homicide may be linked to disputes over bribes from public contracts, and they are investigating whether Brandão led the organization involved. Brandão's nephew, Daniel Brandão, president of the State Court of Auditors, is also mentioned in the probe.
