MCD Intensifies Demolitions and PG Safety Surveys Following Satya Niketan Building Collapse

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched an intensified crackdown on unauthorized construction and dangerous buildings following a building collapse in Satya Niketan. As part of this enforcement drive, the MCD has demolished 58 buildings, sealed 24 properties, and issued 57 show-cause notices for unauthorized construction since the Sunday incident. On Wednesday alone, the civic body carried out 34 demolition actions and sealed 17 properties across 12 zones, with the Narela Zone recording the highest number of demolitions. The actions target violations of the Master Plan of Delhi and building bye-laws, including the misuse of properties.

In a separate safety assessment, the MCD surveyed 1,252 paying guest (PG) buildings between September 7 and 9. The survey found 1,201 buildings to be visibly safe, while 39 require minor repairs and nine need major repairs. Three buildings were categorized as dangerous, and one has already been demolished. Additionally, the civic body identified 26 framed structures above G+4 floors for close monitoring due to potential vulnerability. The MCD is prioritizing the inspection of buildings with more than five storeys with RCC-framed structures or four storeys with load-bearing brick walls.

Broader enforcement data indicates that between June 1 and early September, the MCD has demolished over 1,000 properties and sealed several hundred others. A three-month survey of residential areas also identified over 8,000 cases of commercial misuse across 404 colonies. While the civic body focuses on enforcement, some senior Congress leaders have praised Youth Congress and NSUI workers for their involvement in the rescue efforts at the Satya Niketan site.
